To handle issues of possible stomache upset and multiple visits to the washroom we take an oral vaccine called Dukoral. It is taken on two intervals at home spaced about a week apart a couple of weeks prior to departure and your good to go. Works for us.

Cipro is common for stomach problems but it is a whole body antibiotic.

I have found that XIFAXAN works quite well and the antibiotic only targets the digestive tract so you do not have it effecting all the other bacteria in your body.

However Cipro is very common and easier to get. They even sell it at the pharmacies in Mexico, you see it at the airport.

We now take Dukoral before we travel anywhere in the Caribbean after having months of nasty intestinal issues after a trip to Cuba. Since taking Dukoral we have never had any other issues. You need to take the first dose at least two weeks prior to your departure and the second dose one week prior to departure.

We are in Canada - not sure if this product is available in the US.

Is Dukoral by prescription in Canada or can you get it over the counter? I almost always have some issues no matter where I travel but basically chalked it up to less sleep, more rich food and more drinking. I'd be interested in giving this a try.

Last time we got it straight from the Pharmacist. Most of the time they know more about the drugs than doctors do.

Pyramid

I dont remember the name, but when I asked for Immodium, the girl suggested this particular product. She informed me that it actually killed the bacteria and not just mask the problem.

We noticed we had issues with our stomach when we ate salad.

4 trips to Desire and neither I nor wife any problems - woops I did have a 24 hour thing this July :( I'm pretty certain it had nothing to do with Desire though since wife had the same thing 3 days earlier in Miami :( We do use the bottled water for brushing and drinking in the room. Never had to resort to drugs. I think the resort is pretty safe :D

Our experience is that it is NOT the water or food (Desire is VERY careful about food temps, clean food service, using bottled water in food prep, etc). It is more a combination of lots of drinking, eating richer foods than our normal diet, and dehydration (the body needs a glass of water to compensate for each alcohol serving ~~ it is a BIG challenge to get enough water). Top those off with late nights, accidental swallowing of ocean or hot tub water  , etc. and you have a good formula for tummy troubles!

But when it happens, it can put a damper on the trip. One of us pops a Pepto or two each morning and that seems to tame the issue all week. The other of us only uses Pepto at first signs of discomfort. Either way, wouldn't leave home without the Pepto and a stash of Imodium JUST IN CASE. Glad to know Desire has a product that sounds even better than Imodium.... Thanks Silvie and Gerry for the info!

Safe travel means happy travel!!
