Recent improvements - mosquitos and beach

Postby C-Squared » Fri Mar 25, 2011 6:48 pm

Just got back a couple of days ago, and I thought I'd report on a couple of improvements we observed.

The first you might not notice, but once you do, it's absolutely huge. There were no mosquitos at all! I never once noticed a mosquito; wife was bothered just once. Usually, when you go back to your room at night, you can see a swarm of them around your outside light. This past week there were none around our light. In a conversation with Lazaro I mentioned this, and he said that they had been treating the water in the swamp near the resort. It seems to make a big difference.

The second is their efforts to reclaim the beach. While the difference is still small, I think that the beach is getting wider. They have placed giant sand bags extending out into the water at either end of the beach, and several just beyond the ropes, running parallel to the beach. The purpose seems to be to capture beach sand inside their bounds. I believe this is working to some extent. In the past I've seen water at high tide coming right up to the bottom of the beach beds, but this past week it only reached a few feet short of that (but this might also be due to weather). Also, we swam out to the barriers outside the ropes, and found that just inside these, for perhaps 4-6 feet, the water is only about 3-4 feet deep, so there is definitely sand being trapped by them.

There is also a good deal of landscaping going on. A bunch of shrubs and flowers have been planted within the resort, as well as just outside (near the jacuzzi building), that make nice settings for photos (discreetly, of course).

Our first trip to Desire will be in July so take this response with a grain of salt but I doubt the beach is getting an wider nor the mosquito's getting any better.

A jetty is only needed if you have wave erosion. It sounds as if they have a sea wall which prevents waves and or erosion. More than likely the Moon was a half moon making the high tide lower.

Mosquito's will be roaming the planet long after we've gone. There's no controlling them. Probably a cool night some time prior your vist.

We have not been since November lf 2009, but photos of the beach taken this past fall (there is a link to them on this site - can't recall which post) definitely show it wider than it was before the sand bags were placed. Tides were extremely high between March 21 - March 23, in fact about the highest of the entire year according to tide charts (discounting storms and wind conditions) so the sand level on the beach that C-Squared reported is encouraging. Obviously one storm can wipe out alot of gains, but the trend seems to be good.

We've watched the beach erode away trip after trip after trip....our last trip, at the end of January, the beach had definitely improved since the end of last July......

With regard to the mosquito issue I have to say we are returning for our 4th trip in late July, we have gone the same time each year and we have never had a mosquito problem!!! Each time we've gone it's been quite warm and breezy. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I hope the luck holds out this July....

I agree with c-squared. We were there last week, during a full moon by the way, the beach is improving,no mosquitos, and we NEVER saw them fogging the resort as we have in past years.

by the way c-squared, did we meet??
