Tipping- now split from TR - pls continue posting

This reminds me of the time we tipped the guy who was checking the pH/chemicals at the pool at another resort in Mexico. It was an older gentleman -- pretty sure spoke no English. His gratitude/surprise made our trip even more fun. Why not make someone's day if you can afford to do so?

overevaluating the whole tipping thing,if you are at Desire you have money,we have been there 10 times now and you cant say they are slackers at this place,for the most part they all hustle,and we also like the fact that they treat all the guests the same,tip or no tip,so to say its bribery is absurd,but then again sometimes you need a 5 or a ten spot to get a beach bed or chair at the pool when its crowded,its just the way things are done in the real world.

I booked a cruise with Carnival for this upcoming spring. One of the options when booking was to pre-pay the gratitudes. At the time I though it was odd, since I hadn't received any services to be already tipping. I personally would rather pay a little higher price, and not tip at all, this way everyone receives the same treatment.

O.K. I can't hack it anymore! I have to say my piece. For the most part all of us that go to to Desire from around the world spend thousands of dollars to fly there, stay there, and enjoy being there. For those of you that have never been, the service at this particular resort is, for the most part, above almost any other resort that we have been to. Trip report after trip report, whether on this forum or trip adviser, has people raving about the service that this resort offers. Even the people that have negative things to say about Desire still overwhelmingly comment about the service that this resort has. Now I don't know whether the staff that work there realize what a fortunate job they may have because of Desire's unusual but fun clientele. But when you personally see how hard these people work, tip or no tip, with a permanent smile on their face and a want to make your trip as best it can be. I ask you, with the quality of lifestyle we all have, how in the world do you not want to make their life a little bit easier. We all work hard for our holidays, but none of us work harder than these people do for virtualy no money and dammit, if I'm getting extraordinary service, I want to help them!

Sorry for my rant, but that is how I feel!

Well said Don!!

The staff at Desire have gone above and beyond for us many times personally and for others over the years. Even with the slow turnover of staff there is a certain mentality that they all continue to show towards the guests. Tip or no tip.

So we tip as we see fit but we do remember that a few dollars can make a whole lot of a difference in their lives. We do have our favorites and try to make it special for them with small gifts for them and their kids that we can bring from home. Maple syrup is a big favorite.

These folks are our second family and it lights up our hearts to see them smile.

Too funny. We have brought maple syrup too ! Maybe we should bring a hockey stick, a tim's dozen of crullers and a case of Molson just to finish of the Canadian cliche "eh"? LOL

We tip and will continue to tip. The staff provides excellent service and should be rewarded. Eleven vacations at Desire and always excellent friendly service.

How many other resorts do you know of that you can personally name the staff? CC, Africa, Leo, Roger and Matilda are always there for us every year and that is worth more to us than anything. They get the bulk of our dinero each year and will do so as long as we keep going. August 2011..cant wait.
