The racoons should be removed. They climb on the bar looking for food. If no one is watching are on the table were the pizza and BLTs are prepared.

I quite agree. They aren't really racoons but they (and resort cats) are 'working animals' are not pets - they are more of an annoyance than anything else.

I love the cats on the resort!! And it seems they like the affection I show them and follow me around the resort! I am a cat person and love everything about Desire...even the pets!

Bugs, bugs, bugs!!! Just returned last night and we needed to spray our legs for early morning beach time and did a whole-body coverage for night time.... and I still had plenty of bites. The yellow / orange flies are like deer flies with a bite you cannot ignore! Ant and no-see um bites seem to flare up later. Mosquitos even at high altitude of the jacuzzi area late at night.

Lessons learned:

1. Bug spray on bitty parts tastes awful!! And may well be a cause of digestive troubles, so beware!! Baby wipes go in the bag next time for easy removal.

2. Take Cortisone Cream to help with itch and I discovered Claritin was verrrrry helpful for the more vicious bites. Couldn't stop scratching once I started. Neosporin would be nice to help with places you scratch too vigorously!

3. Bugs seem to bother some and not others. Same place, same time, standing side by side, and one of us was better bait than the other. Not sure how that works!!

The bugs didn't spoil the fun, though!!

We were at Desire the first week of September and found lots of bugs too. For what it's worth and perhaps to add to the already mentioned arsenal of preventions and remedies, we brought along the Off Clip-On. No jokes, please! but it's a small battery operated fan that dispenses a repellent. We put it at a corner of the jacuzzi bed we were on and we got no bites. We used it last year too with the same result. Who knows?

thanks, we both have clip ons as well, we will try that before spraying ourselves.

Glad it worked for you

I was looking at those Off fans - good to know they work. I think we'll get a couple of them also, now that 'summer' is over for us here - there should be some on sale somewhere.

Bugs

Postby gsil668 » Fri Sep 30, 2011 7:10 pm

We just got back on Sept. 27 and I (Silvie) was eaten alive by the bugs. I tried the spray repellent we brought with us, I was bitten...I tried the Mexican suggestion of rubbing shampoo into the skin, I was bitten again. My husband and our friend did not get a single bite, although her husband got a couple. We heard the fogging machine most nights, but I think I was bitten mostly outside our room where they did not spray.

I have to say that the bugs will not keep us from going back.

We heard horror stories before we went in May but with the exception of a few bites on our ankles after walking in the sand late at night we really weren't bothered by them. We may have to load up on repellent etc before go back in Nov.

Its always good to be prepared but from my experience and observations, there weren't that many people who were bitten. I was of the small minority that they feasted on.

After over a dozen trips, only one BAD experience where my wife was eaten alive by the bugs -- way over 100 bites when we got home. Whelps of 3 or 4 bites all right in a row. Everywhere. I had almost none. If she were to read that this is happening to others again, Desire would be off limits.

Whatever it takes, the management needs to control the bugs!

We were there 10/1-10/8 and even though there were plenty of tropical showers throughout the week we had NO problem with bugs/bites etc. I think it is a hit or miss though as there were others who did get bitten. Fyi, We didn't use repellent.
