Use the bottled water for toothbrushing, eat yogurt every day, they have it at the breakfast buffet and bring immodium just in case. We've never had a problem at Desire before.

Ask her doctor for an antibiotic before you leave (explain her propensity for stomach issues in Mexico). A low dose will probably do the trick. She can start taking it before you leave the U.S. Most of the food borne illnesses in Mexico are bacterial so an antibiotic will usually work great ...and FYI, not too many people have problems while at Desire. The resort is pretty careful about that kind of stuff. Also, taking antibiotics may make her susceptible for a yeast infection. You can buy prescription strength medicine (antifungal) for the yeast infection at the pharmacy in Puerto Morelos if she ends up desperate.

We just got back on Sunday from a 7 day stay. I (Anthony) had a touch of queasiness for the better part of one day, but nothing too serious. Suzann had it a bit worse, with symptoms the last three days of our trip, and our first full day at home. Nothing totally debilitating, but certainly uncomfortable, to say the least. For both of us, it manifested as a steady feeling of unease, with occasional spikes of cramps, at one point doubling us over, albeit briefly.

Yogurt is a great suggestion, and we have both been filling up on Kefir since our return. If it's something you're prone to, a Dr. visit prior would be a great idea. Neither of us has a weak stomach, nor were we careful at all while there, so with a bit of prior planning and a modest amount of diligence during your trip, you should be fine. Bringing Probiotics with you might also help - a veteran Desire guest told us that one.

The old "Don't drink the water" thing is not relevant, IMO. It's in everything they prepare, cook with, wash veggies with, etc., so there's no way to avoid it. Wishing you all the best!!

Concaster's advice is right on. And keep in mind that- even though Mexico as a whole has a bad reputation when it comes to food & water problems with tourists-the food and water at Desire and most other major resorts in Mexico is every bit as safe as in any US resort or hotel. Maybe because of that bad rep, they are pretty much obsessed with food safety, and every bit of water used in cooking, dish washing, for showers and lavatories, ice making, etc is all purified water that is trucked in. If you pay attention you'll see the trucks coming in regularly.
But for most of us Mexico is a long way from home. There are all kinds of bacteria everywhere there we aren't used to. We can pick it up from interaction with other people or even off surfaces and end up ingesting it from our own hands. That together with the fact that we are probably doing things that really lower our resistance like:
Drinking too much,
Eating too much , on a different schedule, different foods,
Sleeping too little,
Generally behaving like indestructible teenagers .....
It is really no wonder some of us do pick up a bug here and there. The food and water are just convenient scapegoats !

Wait! Are you saying I'm not an indestructible teenager? L. Acidophilis
is cheap and works wonders and if you aren't a fan of yogurt, you can get some capsules at any pharmacy. Just keep it in the room fridge.

A good idea also is to keep the hot tub water out of your mouth. Not always so easy! :D

Not to burst your bubble at all chonobob- I only know that I am not an indestructible teenager. Even though I plan to go right on acting like it at Desire !

Good point Sharon & David ! That's why concaster's advice is so good............ Just take a pill and enjoy whatever you like ! Lol

Last time we were at Desire we got a mild bout of sick stomach and the product sold at the logo shop worked great, better and faster than Immodium.
Thier product kills the bacteria whereas Immodium only stops the loose stools.

Hope this helps!

Just wondering, any of you have late night pizza or blt at the lobby bar? We're thinking there may be something with the close proximity of the racoons and cats to the preperation area?

We ate at the lobby bar a couple of times late night, and didn't suspect any animal-related contamination. We were both in the foodservice business for years, so we are pretty keen on the topic, and would have noticed if there was an issue like that. Other than Suzann being highly allergic to cats, we don't think the animals were causing any illnesses, at least not while we were there.
