First might I suggest that you just ask (in advance) the food services people at Desire to cook you a special Mexican dinner - they can be very accommodating .....

If you do want a off campus quick trip, there are quite a number of very good restaurants in Puerto Morelos (about a 10min / $8 taxi ride south of Desire)

Here is a link to info and reviews on these

Please note that these places are not your typical "beautified" North American restaurants. We have eaten in many of them and the food, quality and cleanliness has been excellent.

Other than that you can head down to Playa del Carmen where there is a huge number of excellent places to choose from.

Pelicanos

Postby nekkidcouple1964 » Sat Jan 31, 2009 3:43 pm

We ate lunch at the Pelican in Puerto Morelos. It was quite tasty. Good stuff. Good salsa.

Now for the bad news.

I picked up a bug the last time in Mexico. I don't know where to attribute it to but I got a fever and cramps and aches... the full set of stuff. Nasty. It went away and came back three times in 4 weeks before I got some antibiotics.

I did get lemonade there at the Pelican so it may be my own fault. Should have got a beer or can of coke.

The wife got soda and a different dish than I got and had no trouble. Could have been the resort food for all I know.

So, in short the food is great. But beware. I would not give them a bad wrap because I have no idea what caused my problems.

I'm a little worried about trying an off resort restaurant for that reason. I don't want to pick one and end up sick for the rest of my trip. Although, I never leave home without the Cipro, so we would probably be fine.

coco - some simple advice

First, when you are "off campus" only drink bottled water, pop, beer - and preferably directly from the original bottle/can - try to avoid ice cubes and ask for a chilled drink in the original container

Secondly, try to find a restaurant that is popular with locals and then order what the restaurant has on as a daily special

The above two points will go a long way in minimizing potential food beverage related illness
