While planning our 5th trip to desire, we noticed that since LC closed the prices at RM seem to almost doubled!! We are very upset about this and would like to better understand the issue. Seems it will cost us an extra 1000 dollars for a 4 night stay not including airfare.

The rates for DRM increased for 2013(approx 5% more than 2012 and will increase about another 5% for 2014) but certainly not doubled and there has been no price increase since DLC closed.
Unfortunately whether we like it or not, what you see in the DRM rates is that they are comparable to other high end resorts on the Riviera Maya.

john jeri,
You don't mention when you were booking for, but I do know that prices for Desire RM vary considerably between on and off seasons. We are booked to return in November and with the price increase, we only paid a couple of hundred dollars more for a 7 night stay then our July visit.

There is a pretty big difference in price when they have specials going on. I've been checking weekly waiting for the next special to kick in. Paying full price means we get to stay for fewer days. There are no specials at the moment and the price as mentioned by the OP is significantly higher (like 30%, not 5%) than we paid last time.

dandm...what 'specials' are you referring to? I had thought the prices were pretty much fixed and just fluctuated by season?? Appreciate any info on where we can find info on specials? Thanks!

dandm is referring to regular Desire Promo pricing which are posted on their website and are available thru TAs that book the Desire properties - in order to take advantage of the special promo pricing you usually have to book several months in advance of your actual trip.
btw - The regular published Desire Promo special pricing is usually not available during high season months (Jan 1 to April 30th)

I always check and use directrooms.com and alpharooms.com I find the best rates compared to any other sites.

ADMIN NOTE: Just be aware that those sites you listed are based in the EU and the UK and as such "may" have special pricing for the UK and EU market place that may not be honored by Desire if you are not from the EU or UK.
Hedo and many other resorts now require you to show your passport at check in time and if you booked through a EU or UK on line site and DO NOT have a EU or UK passport you will be charged the difference in price between what you paid and their current standard rack rates for North American customers - if you refuse to pay the difference they won't allow you to check in.
I haven't heard it occurring at Desire "yet", but I do know that this is an official policy at Hedo and other resorts in the Caribbean - so do you feel lucky ???

Thank you for clarifying that up Cokeman. What a surprise it would be to arrive at your destination and find out they charge more.

I'm not sure this is totally relevant, but... We were origianlly booked to go to Desire Cabo in Oct when the resort was sold. Desire honored our Cabo rate for a room at DRM so the rate we got was FANTASTIC when I compare it to what I see from various sites on line now. Since we had been going to Cabo for 6 years it was a downer when it closed, but I will say that Desire has done everything they can to make it right and to accomodate us. Now I just have to figure out a way to get the Cabo rate at DRM next year (maybe if I volunteer to do dishes or something)

Like CokeMann mentioned, they post "specials" on the site at different times of the year. Usually it's something like 15-20% off during certain times. That's how we booked last time (in december for May) and how we're going to book next time, they don't have any right now for far enough in advance for us. It looks like they do have some now,
http://desire.originalresorts.com/rates.asp, though we prefer it when the standard rooms are discounted because as long as we have a bed, we're good to go. I'd rather stay an extra day or two than have a nicer room.

Same story for Pearl...
Actually Pearl is more expensive now than RM.

Just an FYI- the prices, specials , and deadline dates for the specials for all of 2014 are out and in the hands of all the travel agents. You can also just use the Desire booking tool at the link above to see the rates and specials without actually booking.
Just put in your dates and click the book now.
You'll find though that the "standard" GV rooms are never on any special- only the "Deluxe" GV are discounted.
There are only 15 of those standard rooms and the regular price on them is as low as it gets.
