PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Has anyone ventured via taxi to Playa Del Carmen or plan to in their upcoming trip. We were wandering if it was safe. Been down before but a little unsure now.

We haven't been there for a while, but there have been absolutely no reports I know of about any violence at all in Playa- or for that matter in the whole Riviera Maya region. Even in Cancun there has been nothing at all for almost a year connected to the drug war violence- and then it only involved a couple criminals killing another.
Unfortunately you can't take what you are hearing on TV these days at face value. As usual, they over generalize and talk about the danger "in Mexico". Do all the research you care to do and you'll find that the drug war is almost entirely limited to the US/Mexican border areas and a couple of Pacific coast Mexican states. Any tourist should be cautious when traveling abroad no matter where they go, but comparatively speaking all indications are that Playa is still a very safe and friendly tourist town.

We are still thinking of going to Playa on our next trip (In 28 Days ! ) to visit "Coco Bongo" on the Wednesday night, instead of attending the lame-ass "eyes wide shut" thing .

Its a long way to get to by Taxi though, so we will probably find a few other couples that want to go party, and get the resort to takes us with an EC, if they will still do that.........

Mike is right though, don't listen to everything you here. If I did, i would never want to venture into Toronto anymore either From what I understand, Playa is still a very nice place.

Actually Playa is approximately the same distance from Desire to the south as the hotel zone and clubs of Cancun to the north. The taxi costs will be about the same as well $35 to $40 USD each way. Playa is very safe (even more so than the Cancun HZ and has by far IMHO a lot better restaurants with reasonable prices, also Playa is a far more walkable area than the Cancun HZ where everything is really spread out

The Coco Bongo in Playa is definitely smaller that the one in the Cancun HZ - but Coco Bongo at either location is an experience that should not be missed !!

btw - either Coco Bongo doesn't open until 10:30 most nights and doesn't really start cooking until 1:00 or 2:00am

we spent 7 days in Playa last year before we went to Desire...dead safe..had a great time....its a fun place

We have been to Playa 4 times over that past 3 years.
We have always stayed there first before going to Desire.
We fly from Western Cananda and hate to waste a night at Desire being all jet lagged and tired. We often stay at La Tortuga off of 5th. Nice adult boutique hotel with roof top jacquizi if you get the suite. We have always wandered around 5th and the next couple of blocks either side late at night and never felt threatened. Well of course you have to say a simple no during the day to all the vendors trying to sell their wares.
My wife even took our young son there by herself one non Desire vaction and went shopping. There are a bunch of nice restaurants in town too.
Good place to buy your souvenirs also. Cheaper that the airport !!

Just a FYI - the newest Coco Bongo is in Playa del Carmen and Desire can arrange a club night there if there are enough couples interested to make up a group trip

This will be our first time at Desire but we are renting a car, only $300 a week. OK we only have a week at Desire but also staying at the JW Marriott in cancun before and after. We have friends who own a hotel in Playa del Carmen and we were there for two weeks last year and it is awesome. Great beaches and a wonderful parties at the beach club Kool.

We researched it and no matter how many times you use your little rental car it's cheaper than taking cabs back and forward to other places, that is unless you just go from and to the airport.

Just got back from Desire a couple weeks ago, and we finished our week in Playa. Went to 5th Ave a couple times, and felt completely safe. Ate at El Fogon, at the recommendation of one of the concierges. About 5 blocks up from 5th. Absolutely excellent, and inexpensive. Well worth the extra walk.

Hello All

Just a quick note to add, do not forget you can rent a car right from the resort for 24 hours or longer. I am thinking it may be a bit cheaper then taken the taxi in the end, at least it was when we did it. Being it was a 24 hour rental, the next morning we ran into Cancun for a short trip.

Again, just a thought....
